When you find that group of songs that have just the right rhythm and energy to them, it can push your workout from good to great. On the flip-side, there’s definitely some playlists that just don’t work; you have to find a playlist that works for your type of workout, if you want to get the most out of it. While high octane tracks bursting with energy are great if you like to do a quick, intense workout, if you’re looking for a longer, steadier workout, that kind of music can easily get you out of your flow and lead to quick burnout. The same goes for the reverse; songs with a steadier pace aren’t going to get you going the same way a banger will if you’re trying to get in a quick, intense workout. First Things First: Know Your Taste


Streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music have entire sections dedicated to workout playlists, but don’t just throw one on before a workout and hope that it does the job. If you want to use one of those already-made playlists, look at the tracks so that you can get a general vibe for what kind of music is going to be in there. New music is great, but if the songs that you do recognize aren’t your thing, chances are that it’s not the playlist for you. For a longer, more endurance focused workout, you’re definitely going to want some variety. You want to get your energy levels up for sure, but you don’t want to fill your playlist with super high-energy tracks; you run the risk of getting a little too excited and burning out. We’d recommend thinking of the endurance playlist a bit like a movie: an upbeat start that warms you up to things, a middle with plenty of excitement (this is where you’ll want your most really high energy songs), and an ending that keeps you intrigued but doesn’t overwhelm. The Intensity Playlist


If you’re looking for a playlist that supplements a more intense workout, things are a little more straightforward. You’ll probably still want to start off with a song or two that will ease you into things (everyone needs to warm up a little bit), but after that, launch right into the tracks that really get you going. It’s not a bad idea to think about the intensity playlist in tiers, starting big, moving into huge, and ending with gigantic. This will help you keep the intensity up even if you start to tire out a bit toward the end of your session.
