When you get into the habit of going to the gym, what you pack up in your gym bag can start to become routine. While some items are a given – your gym clothes, a wipe-down towel, a water bottle – there are some items that you might not put in your gym bag that can improve your overall gym experience. Here are a few items that we put in our gym bag that you might want to start including in yours.
These are an absolute must if you use music to get pumped up during a workout. Bluetooth headphones are especially good for the gym because they don’t have any pesky wires to get caught on arms, legs, and equipment–no one likes getting their headphones ripped out of their ears in the middle of their workout. Make sure you have them fully charged before you pack them in your bag; you don’t want to run out of charge in the middle of a sweat session!
This one might seem like common sense, but it can be easy to forget. You’ll want to bring a healthy, revitalizing snack that you can munch on before and after your workout that can both give you some extra energy and help with muscle recovery. We recommend something carb-heavy for workout fuel, and something rich in protein and carbs for recovery.
Everyone is going to work up a sweat- and probably a smell- during an intense exercise. There are a few fundamentals you should keep in the gym bag: think deodorant, face wipes, and sanitizer (gyms tend to be very germ-y). We also like to pack a few precautionary items, like band-aids, bandages, pain-relief products, and feminine hygiene items; it’s better to be safe than sorry!
If you’re someone who uses the gym shower right after your workout, you’ll also want to have spare shampoo, conditioner, body wash/soap, and bath towel. Bringing a pair of water shoes or sandals for the shower is also something we’d definitely recommend. Even at the cleanest gym, you’ll want to avoid being barefoot in the shower, or else leave yourself open to a seriously irritating case of athlete’s foot.
Gym Bag Care Products
If you want to prevent your bag from stinking up the entire gym, there are two small, easy items to carry that we always have on hand. First, bring a plastic bag large enough to fit your workout clothes into; you’ll want to put your sweaty workout clothes in that bag once you’re done to help limit that wet-clothes odor from taking over your whole gym bag.
To further ensure that you don’t end up with a stinky gym bag, an anti-bacterial, odor eliminating spray is also an important tool to wield. Just a few sprays of that into your gym bag after a workout will do wonders keeping your bag smelling fresh.
So there we have it! Adding these items to your gym bag will help to improve your gym experience, pre-workout, in-workout, and post-workout. A good workout is exhausting enough–why make it harder by finding yourself without something that you could really use?
